While the average age for menopause (when your periods stop permanently and you can no longer get pregnant) in the United States is 52, the transition to menopause (called perimenopause) usually starts in a woman’s mid to late 40s and lasts on average four years. But some women begin menopause earlier. In fact, premature menopause affects over 5% of women.

There are myriad symptoms associated with perimenopause, and they can be shifty and unpredictable. Some cycle in and out over a decade while others will set up camp and stay for a few years. Your perimenopause “cocktail” will be totally unique to you in every way. And just when you think you’ve got a handle on it, it will probably change.

But wait, there’s more uncertainty: You won’t know which symptoms you’ll have or how severe they’ll be until they arrive. And for some women, they can arrive unexpectedly early. So let’s take a look at the smorgasbord of perimenopause symptoms. Better yet, let’s talk about them.
